Myopia Control Lens

Myopia in children is increasingly common worldwide, driven by genetic and environmental factors. Defocus-incorporated multiple-segment (DIMS) lenses are a proven solution to slow myopia progression by reducing axial eye growth, the main cause of myopia.

Asian children tend to develop myopia earlier and faster, increasing their risk of high myopia and severe eye diseases.

Can Myopia Be Slowed in Children?

Asian children tend to develop myopia earlier and progress faster, increasing their risk of high myopia and severe eye diseases later in life. A 2019 Hong Kong study found that children using DIMS lenses had 52% less myopia progression and 62% slower axial growth than those with single-vision lenses over two years.

FAQs:

What is MyoBlok™?

MyoBlok™ is a DIMS (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) myopia control lens designed to slow myopia progression in children. It features an outer surface with 940 micro-lenses arranged in 10 annular layers, creating defocus zones that reduce axial eye growth, the main cause of myopia.

Do DIMS lenses work?

DIMS lenses have been shown to significantly reduce the progression of myopia, with studies indicating a 52% reduction in myopia progression and a 62% reduction in axial eye growth compared to traditional single-vision lenses over a two-year period. In clinical trials, children wearing DIMS lenses experienced slower axial eye growth, which is directly linked to myopia progression, leading to more stable vision over time.

How do DIMS lenses slow myopia development?

DIMS lenses use a unique optical design that focuses on myopic defocus in the peripheral areas of the retina. To understand this, it's important to know that myopia (nearsightedness) occurs when the eye grows too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it.

DIMS lenses create a defocus pattern on the peripheral retina, by incorporating multiple segments of micro-lenses on the surface of the lens, which directs light in a way that causes slight defocus in the peripheral regions of the retina. While the central part of the lens still provides clear vision for close and far distances (just like regular lenses), the outer segments create myopic defocus in the periphery.

This controlled defocus pattern is crucial for slowing axial eye growth, which is the primary factor responsible for the progression of myopia.

Can my child use MyoBlok™?

DIMS lenses are primarily most effective for children aged 6 to 12 years, as this is the period when myopia progression is typically at its fastest. However, they are also suitable for children as young as 3 years old. In younger children, the lenses help address the rapid eye growth that contributes to myopia development.

While DIMS lenses can work for older children and even adults, they are most beneficial during the developmental years when the eye is still growing and more responsive to intervention.

Can DIMS lenses replace regular glasses?

Yes, DIMS lenses can be used as regular corrective glasses. They provide clear vision while also offering the added benefit of myopia control, and need no special care.

Are DIMS lenses uncomfortable to wear?

The MyoBlok™ DIMS design ensures daily comfort, through carefully calibrated micro-lenses, preventing discomfort or visual distortion. The lenses are optically clear, allowing children to engage in activities like reading, playing, and screen time without noticing any significant change in vision. Made from high-quality materials, they are lightweight and comfortable for long-term daily wear.

Can MyoBlok™ be used to prevent myopia?

DIMS lenses are primarily designed for children with existing myopia, as they help slow progression by reducing axial eye growth. However, they can also delay the onset or slow progression in children showing early signs of refractive error or near-sighted tendencies - by creating myopic defocus on the peripheral retina, DIMS lenses slow eye elongation, the primary cause of myopia development. They may be especially beneficial for high-risk children, such as those with a family history of myopia.
